International Studies (single / combined honours)

Home   >>   Humanities   >>   International Studies (single / combined honours)

International Studies at Buckingham is premised on the fact of world interdependence / globalisation as the major development of our time. Changes in transport, telecommunications and computing have encouraged economic changes such as the decline in trade barriers, the internationalisation of financial markets, the rise of global companies, and a massive increase in the volume of international trade in goods and services. University of Buckingham BA degrees, rooted in the traditional disciplines of Economics, Politics, and History, reach out to study this increasingly open world, and through their flexibility and their interdisciplinary nature prepare you for a wide range of careers within it. See links (right).

The main International Studies degree responds to the demand for graduates with good economic understanding and skills, and aims to give those graduates the ability to relate knowledge in Economics to the current political world and to place their contemporary understanding in a proper historical context. You can also study International Studies with a language component. With the ‘fast-track' element in our degrees, it is possible, in a third year of study, to go on to gain a postgraduate qualification, either the MA in Global Affairs, or the MBA, for those with a clear business orientation. As with the rest of Humanities, International Studies maintains small-group teaching, disappearing at other universities, allowing a real immersion in the subject, and thoughtfulness and care in the teaching. There are good book collections in the three related areas of the degree in the Hunter Street Humanities Library.

I remember a member of staff from Buckingham made a presentation at my school; that was several years ago and since then friends of mine have studied here. I was particularly interested in International Studies; it offered an excellent combination of Politics, History and Economics courses. The Department is so helpful - the personal contact is a major benefit. Just knowing you can knock on a tutor's door to discuss an issue is great. The 2-year programme is demanding but I don't find it pressurised. It is good to be able to complete my degree in a shorter time.
