The Supreme Court is a place of interest for all Law students, especially those currently studying Constitutional and Administrative Law. The Law Society organised a fantastic trip, which included a guided tour and the opportunity to observe two ongoing cases. The first, W (Children), was a fact-finding hearing in which it was considered whether a child in a case involving allegations of sexual abuse should be compelled to give evidence in order to allow cross-examination. This case was a good introduction for students hoping to study Family Law later in the year. The second case Inveresk plc v Tullis Russell Papermakers Limited (Scotland) involved a contract matter in the Privy Council. It examined the issue of retention in Scottish law. There was a stark contrast between Privy Council cases and Supreme Court cases in terms of attire and formalities. Tiffany McKenzie, President of the Law Society, planned the day out to perfection. Lunch was held at the "Café in the Crypt", which gave an added cultural experience to the day. The Law Society also generously paid for lunch for all the students who attended. The students were treated to an opportunity to speak to a Judicial Assistant, which gave everyone another perspective on careers within the Supreme Court. The Law Society should be commended for arranging such a fantastic trip!
