Louis Harrison, Caroline Cushen & Susan Hutchison, Achieve IELTS Grammar and Vocabulary (London: Marshall Cavendish Education, 2009). 192 pp. + CD. ISBN: 978-0-462-09897-5.
Achieve IELTS Grammar and Vocabulary is a practice book designed to accompany the Achieve IELTS series. International students preparing to take the IELTS (International English Language Testing System) examination can find clear contextualised explanations of key grammar points and practice activities. These provide students with the necessary knowledge of grammatical structure to complete the academic exercises within the IELTS test, such as describing trends and processes or writing a discursive essay. Vocabulary is presented in lexical sets and includes collocations and phrases to enable students to expand their range, recognise word forms, and sound natural in their use of English. The book comes with an audio CD for listening and pronunciation practice.
Caroline Cushen has worked in the English Department of the University of Buckingham for eight years. She currently co-ordinates the EAP Foundation programme and teaches on the BA in English Studies for Teaching course. She is an experienced IELTS examiner, and is also responsible for in-situ English testing for the University. In Summer 2008, she launched the IELTS preparation course at Buckingham, using Achieve IELTS as the main course book. This 9-week course now takes place each year in the Summer Term, and will incorporate the use of Achieve IELTS Grammar and Vocabulary, which Buckingham students have helped to pilot during the writing process.
