HOWLING AT LIBERTY'S DOOR
A highly topical debate on the theme of terrorism, real and imaginary, and its effect on the erosion
of well-established, historical, hard-won rights
Monday 4 June 2007
Following the successful relaunch of the Denning Law Journal, the University of Buckingham Press is delighted to announce a new date for your diaries – the first annual Denning Law Journal Conference to be held on Thursday 27 September 2007 from 09:30 - 17:30 at The Law Society, Chancery Lane, London WC2A 1PL.
The title of the conference, Howling at Liberty's Door, is inspired by the words of W. B. Yeats: "What if the Church and the State, Are the mob that howls at the door!" and will:
- Explore the assault on Liberty by the state.
- Interrogate the way in which the terrorist threat is both real and imagined in popular and legal discourse.
- Discuss legislation as a result of recent acts of terrorism.
Seven distinguished experts in the field of human rights have already agreed to speak at the conference:
- Sir Louis Blom-Cooper QC
- Edward Fitzgerald QC
- Professor Conor Gearty
- Desmond Fernandes
- Mark Muller QC
- Dr Jocelynne Scutt
- Keir Starmer QC
The exact titles of their papers will be confirmed at a later date, but will address questions such as who are the terrorists? Why are they doing it? How are we managing our need to protect ourselves? How does this affect our personal freedoms? How do we conceptualise the terrorist threat? Does this affect our mindset? Is the government trying to control our thinking? Lord Slynn of Hadley will give an introduction and the conference will be chaired by Dr Susan Edwards from the University of Buckingham Law School.
We are expecting barristers and solicitors, academics, police, human rights charities and everyone concerned about the erosion of civil liberties as a result of terrorism to attend. The conference has been accredited with 6 hours of CPD points by the the Bar Council and of course it can be used for non-accredited Law Society points.
| "Our intention is to encourage consideration about this debate from every angle to create a day of real dialogue and thought." | ||||
| Dr Susan Edwards |
