'Top Psychology department' in the 2009 National Student Survey |
Psychology is the science of mind and behaviour. The Psychology degree at Buckingham is designed to give our students a broad understanding of contemporary psychological science. Studying psychology will provide you with invaluable employment and life skills not least of which is a much greater understanding of people.
Why is Psychology at Buckingham different?
The BSc (Hons) Psychology degree is the main programme offered by the Psychology Department at Buckingham, alongside a variety of combinations of psychology with other subjects. There are two entry points, September and January and the programme runs for two years (two years and three months for the September entry). You will have some choice in the courses you study for your degree and Buckingham students typically study three courses in each term with exams every six months (in June and December).
Small group teaching is integral to the courses we offer at Buckingham. All lectures are accompanied by separate small-group tutorial sessions in which the students and staff discuss the theories, research and issues involved in the particular course they are studying. The Psychology Department at Buckingham guarantee that:
- The tutorials on your courses will be conducted by a member of academic staff (in many Universities tutorials are conducted by teaching assistants or postgraduate students).
- There will not be more than six students in any Psychology course tutorial (again many Universities will have tutorial groups containing many more than six students).
Ask the other institutions to which you are applying to study whether they can match, let alone improve on, these guarantees! Our size also means that we can devote more time to our students. In the Psychology Department we have an open door policy which means that our students are able to drop in and speak to us more frequently than at other institutions.
